The Journey of Ahirul Habib Padilah in Sustainable Farming

sustainable farming

When I first heard about Ahirul Habib Padilah, I was struck by a sense of awe that words hardly capture. Here was someone who left behind the comforts of city life to return to his roots, fueled by a purpose much larger than himself. Habib didn’t just go home; he brought with him a vision—a dream to build a future for his village through integrated, sustainable farming. His story isn’t just about farming; it's about a profound dedication to community, growth, and the pursuit of a better world. And in his journey, he’s inspired many, including myself, to reconsider what it means to live meaningfully and sustainably.

Imagining myself in Habib’s shoes, I often wonder how it would feel to take that first step away from the known, toward something uncertain but deeply purposeful. Habib’s journey reminds us that when we come together with shared goals, we can create lasting change. It’s the kind of transformation that goes beyond individual gains—it enriches everyone it touches. Someday, I hope to walk a path as impactful as his, working hand-in-hand with others for a brighter, greener future.

From the City Lights Back to the Village

Habib’s story began in Pontianak, where he had built a steady life for himself. He was a part-time lecturer at Tanjungpura University, enjoying the relative security and comfort that came with his role, despite it being non-permanent. To him, city life offered a stability he had never experienced while growing up in the remote village of Nanga Sayan—a small, often overlooked spot on the map of West Kalimantan.

But everything changed in 2017 when his father called him home, asking him to take over the family’s land. Initially, Habib resisted. He’d grown accustomed to the conveniences and predictability of the city, and the thought of returning to a rural life felt daunting. Yet, a small voice in his heart whispered, “This is your chance to give back to the family and honor your parents.” His father was aging and could no longer manage the land alone. With time and introspection, Habib made the difficult decision to leave behind his city life and return to his roots.

Rekindling Hope in His Hometown

Leaving Pontianak was bittersweet, but Habib returned to Nanga Sayan with a wealth of experience and a new sense of purpose. Although his background was in political science—he had earned a Master’s degree from Universitas Padjadjaran—the lessons he learned during his studies were invaluable. They taught him to listen, to understand people’s needs, and to appreciate the importance of community-centered initiatives.

His first role upon returning was as a Village Companion under the Ministry of Villages, allowing him to work closely with locals and gain a deeper understanding of their challenges. He recalled observing modern farming methods in Bandung, where he’d seen how successful integrated farming could be. “If they can do it, why can’t we?” he thought. With this newfound motivation, Habib set out to develop an integrated farming system in Nanga Sayan. His goal was simple yet ambitious: to empower farmers to diversify their sources of income, incorporating fishery and livestock alongside traditional crops.

Overcoming Doubt, One Step at a Time

Habib’s vision wasn’t without its challenges. Many locals were skeptical, questioning why he’d complicate things when the existing farming methods seemed adequate. Some even saw his education as a hindrance rather than an asset, doubting the value of academic knowledge in a practical field like farming.

Undeterred, Habib knew that actions spoke louder than words. Rather than getting caught up in lengthy explanations, he decided to lead by example. He allocated a portion of his father’s land as an experimental site for his integrated farming methods, transforming it into a small-scale model of his vision.

With a modest home in the middle of the field and solar panels to power his work, Habib created a gathering space where local farmers could take breaks, share ideas, and observe his methods firsthand. Gradually, he began to change their perceptions. Seeing the progress on his land, one farmer after another became curious, eventually willing to try out some of his techniques.

Achieving Sustainability in Nanga Sayan

Habib’s relentless dedication eventually paid off. Within a year, the benefits of integrated farming became apparent. Farmers who had once relied solely on rice now enjoyed varied harvests. Many even started raising fish and livestock, which became additional sources of income. This newfound diversity not only improved their financial security but also strengthened the resilience of the community as a whole.

In 2022, Habib’s work earned him the Semangat Astra Terpadu Untuk (SATU) Indonesia Award in the environmental category. This award stands as a testament to his dedication and the positive impact he’s made on his community and the environment. His achievements are a reminder that meaningful progress doesn’t always start with large-scale initiatives; it often begins with one individual’s commitment to making a difference.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Habib’s journey is a powerful reminder that transformation can stem from humble beginnings. His story isn’t just about a shift in farming practices; it’s about breaking down barriers and encouraging others to believe in the possibilities of change. He’s shown us that true success isn’t measured by titles or wealth but by the positive legacy we leave behind.

Through his work, Ahirul Habib Padilah has paved a path of hope for future generations. His approach goes beyond merely improving livelihoods; it fosters independence among farmers and promotes sustainable practices that will benefit the land and community for years to come. His efforts inspire us to rethink our relationship with our environment, teaching us that when we work together and stay committed to our goals, we can cultivate lasting change.

Together in Purpose, Building for the Future

Habib’s story serves as a beacon of what can be achieved when we join hands with a shared vision for a sustainable future. By uniting his skills, education, and passion with the needs of his village, he has brought his community to a place of self-sufficiency and pride. It’s a legacy of hope, resilience, and determination—one that reminds us all that we have the power to create a brighter, more sustainable world.

As we reflect on his journey, may it inspire each of us to contribute in our own ways to the communities and environment around us. Together, we can build, create, and nurture a world that thrives long after we’re gone—a world where sustainable practices are woven into the fabric of daily life.

Jamur blotong Nama Ilmiahnya Ternyata Coprinus sp.

Bunga Telang Ungu (Clitoria ternatea) Jadi Alternatif Pengganti Indikator PP Sintetis

Batik Mangrove, Qorry’s Journey in Conservation & Heritage

I feel like when I wear batik, I look more elegant and even more handsome. Haha! I have to admit, there was a time when I considered batik to be old-fashioned. The designs didn't appeal to me, and I saw it as something my parents or grandparents would wear on formal occasions. But everything changed for me on October 2, 2009, when UNESCO officially recognized batik as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Suddenly, batik wasn’t just a piece of cloth anymore; it was a symbol of identity, culture, and pride for the Indonesian people. Designers started experimenting with patterns, and batik garments became more fashionable. I found myself buying batik shirts to support our cultural heritage, and my love for batik grew deeper as I discovered the beautiful artistry behind it. Batik, with its intricate techniques, symbols, and cultural significance, has been a part of Indonesia's identity for centuries. It wasn’t long before batik from various regions, including my hometown of Situbondo,

Persentase tinggi ini men

Bagaimana menu isi piringku yang benar?

Sering mendengar frase Isi Piringku?

A Call to Embrace Eco-Friendly Fashion

Kredit: Instagram @nurmanfarieka On a bright morning, as I wandered in search of eco-friendly local leather shoes, I stumbled upon a trail of hope—leading to an extraordinary story of Hirka, a brand of chicken foot leather shoes crafted by Nurman Farieka Ramdhany in Bandung. This journey became my connection to a future where fashion and sustainability walk hand in hand. The Hidden Treasure: Chicken Foot Leather as a Sustainable Fashion Material In today's world, luxury items are often flaunted as a must-have for the elite. Yet, many may not realize that a significant portion of these products comes from the wild, using animal skins that are not sourced through ethical breeding but through capture and exploitation. This raises the question: How can we, as part of a global community, rethink the way we approach fashion? In 2015, Nurman Farieka Ramdhany embarked on an inspiring journey of environmental care and innovation. Guided by his father, a leather research expert with over two
