This is how I came to learn about David Hidayat, a young man from Sungai Pinang, West Sumatra. David’s work in conservation, specifically his efforts to protect Indonesia’s invaluable coral reefs, is a testament to how one person’s resolve can inspire a whole community. Living in Indonesia, I’m constantly reminded of the incredible riches beneath our waters. Sore itu, langit mulai berubah keemasan. Deru motorku berhenti di sebuah ujung jalan setapak, tepian hutan bakau ( Rhizophora sp . ) yang usianya sudah berpuluh-puluh tahun. Sekeliling terdiri dari pohon bakau yang batangnya tak beraturan. Akarnya menghujam ke dalam tanah dan akar napasnya menyembul kuat lewat permukaan tanah itu. Ada sebuah jalan setapak di sana. Tak beberapa jauh ada sungai tenang yang berujung pada pantai. Rapatnya pohon-pohon bakau hanya memberi sedikit celah untuk cahaya matahari masuk ke dasar hutan Situbondo, saat itu sangat sendu. Angin semilir lembut satukan rindu. Kaki melangkah masuk ke dalam jalan setapak itu. Udara menjadi lembab dan sedikit gelap. Langit terhalang oleh daun-daun Rhizophora yang dengan bahagia menghirup polutan dan embuskan oksigen ke udara. Selama beberapa menit mata saya menari-nari ke sekeliling.
